What you’ll be doing...

This Technical Manager of Software Development will lead and grow a team of 15 engineers and multiple outsourced teams across Web, Mobile, Embedded & Geo Spatial Development, Dev Ops, Architecture, and QA to drive the innovation, reliability, scalability and performance of the Skyward platform. This Technical Manager will understand market, customer and technical requirements and ensure software functions and designs are clearly identified and architectural goals are aligned with requirements. This leader will continue to develop and sustain the Skyward platform, while executing on the plan of record and deliver on time/on spec. He/She will work with the executive team and the Leader of Product management to create the product roadmaps to determine release content utilizing available capacity and ensure that the business and technology roadmaps are aligned. This Technical Manager will oversee the creation of detailed development plans for multiple products, project teams, or strategic initiatives that are aligned with business objectives. This Technical Manager will oversee the execution and delivery of projects and software releases that are on time and in accordance with agreed-to design, quality and process standards in taking early stage prototypes and transitioning them to commercially successful products.

This Technical Manager of Software Development will be the driving force to implement best practices in SaaS and mobile development, including project development, test and operations, making the development process predictable, repeatable and scalable while continuously increasing the output and performance of the group. He/She will set clear objectives and ensure that code is maintainable, easily enhanced and consistent with the architecture and business goals. This leader will drive the linkage of engineering to the executive team, product and entire company, communicate specifics of development, release schedule, tradeoff analysis and foster collaboration among all departments/functions at Skyward.

He/She will recruit, develop, motivate and retain a world class team and be responsible for the overall direction, coordination and continuous evaluation of the team. This Technical Manager, Software Development will foster individual career development and high morale and will develop first level managers. He/She will manage the engineering budget. Like all senior roles at Skyward, this executive is expected to be a strategic thinker, people manager, and hands on leader committed to the team effort required to grow a new business in an emerging market.

Responsibilities and Duties
•Build out the core technology and mapping features/functionality, while executing on the plan of record and deliver on time/on spec.
•Collaborate with Product Managers in the development of technical product roadmaps to determine release content utilizing available capacity and ensure that the business and technology roadmaps are aligned.
•Oversee the creation of detailed development plans for multiple products, project teams, or strategic initiatives that are aligned with business objectives.
•Drive the execution and delivery of projects and software releases that are on time and in accordance with agreed-to design, quality and process standards.
•Be the driving force to implement best engineering practices including project development, test and operations, making the development process predictable, repeatable and scalable while continuously increasing the output and performance of the group.
•Recruit, develop, motivate, mentor and retain a high performance team and be responsible for the overall direction, coordination and continuous evaluation of the team.
•Perform detailed code reviews ensuring that the code is optimally written, sustainable, and solves the business problems.
•Responsible for the design and implementation of applications’ build, release, deployment, and configuration activities
•Build and maintain engineering metrics showing application health, team performance, and schedule compliance
•Participate in sprint planning and code review
•Look for opportunities for continual improvements in applications and processes
•Comfort with frequent, incremental code testing and deployment
•Ensure a scalable process and technologies with a focus on high availability
•Keeps the customer always first in the design and implementation
•Adapts to changing and evolving business priorities by offering options and constructive ideas on how to achieve the goals given the realities of time and resources
•Enhances organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
•Willingness to pitch-in and help others on the team as needed
•Provide timely estimates and on-going progress and transparency of work using tools like Jira along with updates in daily stand-ups
•Recommends system solutions for user requirements by comparing advantages and disadvantages; provide estimates and on-going status via burn-downs and stand-ups
•Keep abreast of technology trends and best practices

What we’re looking for...

Skills and Qualifications
•5+ years of proven track record of success as a Director of Development, leading the development and deployment of a high volume/scale SaaS and cloud applications.
•1+ year of experience with various data privacy practices and requirements such as SOX and HIPAA
•5+ years of developing large-scale system development, data modeling, and performance tuning.
•3+ years of data modeling experience using relational database technologies.
•2+ years of writing complex SQL queries
•Technically deep with the ability to quickly understand very complex system level software and guide the correct key decisions by the engineering team and company. Must have a successful track record of leadership in the organization as the senior technology executive.
•Deep passion for user experience, scalable apps, elegant software, agile development and operational excellence.
•Strong, proven management skills and the ability to inspire others to achieve success.
•Experience/success scaling up a development team, anticipating and planning for the challenges that come with growth and fully develops, motivates, mentors and leads his/her team.
•Minimum 3 year experience with Agile development practices (Scrum, XP, etc.)
•3+ years of experience with Java, Spring, Spring Boot, Hibernate and related technologies
•2+ years of experience with Angular, JavaScript, and related technologies
•2+ years of experience with Database technologies (Postgres, Oracle, MySql, etc) including SQL.
•2+ year of experience managing AWS environments
•Experience with continuous integration application delivery, including provisioning, deployment, testing and version control.
•Experience developing and implementing automated processes and systems

Required
•Bachelor’s degree.
•Ability to work in a highly collaborative team.
•Demonstrated aptitude and desire to learn new skills.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
•Ability to embrace change and work in an iterative development environment.
•Ability to develop a deep understanding of the commercial UAS marketplace and customers’ needs.
•Willing to relocate to Portland, OR.

Preferred
•Experience working in a startup environment.
•Experience flying drones for business or pleasure.
•AWS Certification
•UAS Part 107
