Who we are:

Neighborhood House is here for families facing hunger and homelessness, vulnerable seniors and children who need help in school. Founded in 1905 by the Portland Section of the National Council of Jewish Women, Neighborhood House was the city’s first organization committed to helping the many immigrants who were arriving at that time, and living primarily in South Portland.

What we do:

Neighborhood House assists low-income, recent immigrant and other vulnerable people living in the greater Portland area. Our programs serve disadvantaged children needing help to be successful in school, families facing hunger and homelessness, and seniors needing support so they can remain living active and independent lives.

Neighborhood House's program participants represent a remarkably diverse mix of ethnicities and cultures. To meet the needs of these diverse communities, Neighborhood House offers culturally-specific services for African, Latino, Middle Eastern and Russian immigrants in various programs. We have many bilingual staff who speak Spanish, Russian and Somali and other African languages to effectively reach out to non-English speakers and to insure they feel welcome and are getting the help they need. What we offer our employees:

Neighborhood House believes our employees are our best investment. Because of this, we provide an excellent full-time (30 hours and above) benefits package including a fully paid medical plan with no out of pocket expenses for co-pays, prescriptions, out-of-pocket expenses (really!) through our Nonstop Wellness broker, paid dental insurance, paid life insurance, paid long term disability insurance, 403B with matching, FSA, and more. Job Title: Development Coordinator

The Development Coordinator is a key member of our Fundraising/Community Engagement/Communications Team tasked with substantial writing for constituent communications, Neighborhood House publications, social media and media releases. Collaborates with Development Team to coordinate fundraising and donor cultivation events, supporting community relations campaigns and working to build relationships for the organization.

Primarily responsible for creating content to implement NH’s annual P.R./communications plan, e.g. media releases and articles for Neighborhood House publications, website content.
Use e-communication software to manage agency email list and publish monthly e-newsletter.
Manage and build NH’s social media presence.
Coordinate annual fundraising events/campaigns, including an annual dinner/auction.
Coordinate donor cultivation events, including annual Leadership Circle Dinner.
Work to support existing and build new community partnerships.
Recruit and train event committee members and volunteers.
Support community-based resource development efforts, including annual SW HOPE: Feed the Hungry Campaign and Winter Wishes gift drive.
Develop basic promotional materials for some events and campaigns.
Assist with production and coordination of direct mail projects.
Work with Development Director to create additional events/campaigns to reach new donor constituencies.

A bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or a related field, and at least two years of experience in non-profit fundraising.

This position does not supervise.

Excellent communication skills (written and oral), including strong copywriting abilities.
Proficiency with MS Office Suite. Basic proficiency in InDesign, or similar graphic design software preferred.
Experience with fund management database; Raiser’s Edge experience preferred.
Strong event and project management skills with orientation to detail.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with proven ability to build relationships with volunteers and community organizations.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team; must be flexible and able to adjust to changing job demands.
Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and evidence of insurability.
Available to work some weekend and evening hours.
Must pass criminal background check as a condition of employment.
Must be passionate about Neighborhood House’s mission of Helping Neighbors Help Themselves; able to work with people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing and oral form. Ability in researching, analyzing, and problem solve.
